Bulletproof Vehicles on the Rise in Mexico

Bulletproof Vehicles on the Rise in Mexico

MEXICO CITY — Carlos Nader drives the congested streets in a bulletproof Mercedes-Benz equipped with pepper spray and a 120-decibel alarm.

He has had bullets bounce off the car and once scared off an assailant by blasting his alarm, which is as loud as a jet engine.

Nader knows his car makes him a target of kidnappers and thieves in a country that has an “alarming” rate of carjackings and ransom abductions, according to the U.S. State Department. In Mexico these days, “everyone’s a target,” said Nader, owner of Protecto Glass International, a vehicle armor company.

A growing number of Mexicans — including many from the middle class — see bulletproofing their vehicles as a necessity and not a luxury.

Nader says an increasingly typical customer these days “is a regular guy that works, maybe he has a small business and he’s been approached by criminals to steal his car.”

“You’ll see Hondas, small SUVs … pickups,” Nader said of some of the vehicles arriving at his business.

Extortion is now commonplace in some regions of Mexico. Kidnapping has soared by more than 300% over the past five years and since December 2006, more than 28,000 Mexicans have died in killings blamed on drug-cartel violence.

The violence has sparked a jump in bulletproofing.

Although exact figures for the industry are unavailable to the public, the Mexican Association of Automobile Armorers, an industry group, reports an annual growth rate of 10% in recent years and values the market at $80 million per year. Automakers such as Mercedes-Benz, Volvo and Volkswagen sell bulletproof models in Mexico dealerships. A bulletproof Volkswagen Bora, a model similar to a Jetta, sells for $70,000.

Some armoring companies report backlogs for a process that takes up to 12 weeks and costs up to $80,000.

“If you brought me your car right now, I couldn’t receive it until February,” said Esteban Hernandez Lopez, managing director of Auto Safe in Mexico City.

Twenty years ago, armored cars barely existed in Mexico. Bulletproofing was only for the wealthiest businessmen and most powerful politicians. Today, armoring companies say they armor Ferraris for celebrities, SUVs for executives and politicians, and even Nissans for young professionals and small-business owners.

The demand for bulletproofing has created a bonanza for U.S. companies.

The Texas Armoring Corp. of San Antonio reports a near quadrupling of its Mexican business over the past five years and a strong demand for rush deliveries. Executive Vice President Jason Forston says he has noticed growth at the lower end of the market.

“In recent years … it’s not only that really elite market. You’re seeing a lot more people from the middle of the market, upper-middle-class folks, looking for protection,” Forston said.

He says he has armored cars made by Kia, the modestly priced South Korean carmaker, for Mexican clients.

Nader says even clients who can afford high-priced vehicles often drive “low-target cars.”

“They want to become a regular person on the street,” he says.

Nader joined the industry in 1993 shortly after being shot in the leg during a holdup. At the time, there were fewer than five bulletproofing companies in Mexico. He estimates that today there are more than 90 companies in the business.

Etiquette Questions for the Executive Protection Agent

Etiquette Questions for the Executive Protection Agent

Introducing Bodyguard Blogs new ongoing feature on Etiquette & Protocol.  Like any other profession, image is important in our business and first impressions are lasting ones.  Knowing how to shoot is great, but if you can not get a second interview with an employer, all those great skills might go to waste.  To help with this, we brought in the big guns, namely writer and etiquette coach, Susanne Dancer.

Q: What’s the best type of suit for an EP agent to wear? (Fabric? Single or double breasted? Color?)  -Larry W. Texas

A: The best suit fabric for any suit is wool as there two weights available: summer or tropical, such as worsted which is the most common weight used for suits and winter such as tweed or flannel.  Linen suits might look good for the first half  hour, but do not wear well in an EP environment.

The recommended colours for suits are navy, gray, charcoal and black if you can wear it plain wool, herringbone, pin stripe or chalk stripe without giving off that “hit man bodyguard” look.

Buy the best you can afford and always get an extra pair of pants with a suit.  Try on different styles and colours along with plain or striped to see what suits you based off of skin tone, weight and height.

Always go with a single breasted suit.  Double breasted might be making a fashion come back but also would be a hindrance for the Close Protection Agent as you cannot wear it unbuttoned without it looking sloppy.

A three piece can look good but requires a degree of confidence to pull off.  Also it can help to provide some additional concealment for body armour for hazardous situations.   There are some options to a normal waist coat such as the Stab Vest from PPSS featured in a recent edition of The Circuit Magazine.

Remember if you do wear a weapon or other gear (i.e. radios) as part of your assignments remember to bring it with you and wear it when you are getting suits fitted.  It also would not hurt to make friends with a reliable tailor,  as it makes all the difference when it comes to getting alterations on short notice.

Sunglasses Aren’t Just for Show

Sunglasses Aren’t Just for Show

By Derek Chock

When people think Bodyguards they automatically conjure up a mental picture of a guy in a suit with an earpiece and dark glasses.  Well there is a very good reason for that, and it’s not just “the look”.  Eye protection while working an assignment is crucial not just for protection from glare, but to increase the contrast of what we view as well as for protection from debris and flying objects that may be encountered.  Working as a Close Protection Agent, it’s easy to understand that one of the most important tools that I have are my eyes.   We are paid to be professional observers, to use our eyes to identify danger before it becomes a threat to our protectee.

Wearing ordinary glasses with non-tempered lenses is not sufficient for a number of reasons, not least of which is that they can shatter on impact.  In addition, cheaper plastic-lens sunglasses also lack impact-resistance and may break into dangerous sharp-edged pieces if hit by projectiles. It is essential to choose your glasses carefully and ensure that they are safety-certified. That also means you need to avoid the soft plastic lenses that claim “impact resistance” without having satisfied any form of testing standards.

In my professional opinion, the quality and standard to which Oakley creates its products is on a level that I haven’t found to be matched by any other company.  Oakley uses a compound which they call Plutonite® for all of their lenses.  Regardless of whether they are creating prescription or standard sunglasses, everything they create meets the standards put forth by the American National Standards Institute.  Oakley tests their lenses for both heavy object low speed impact and lighter weight high-speed impact. This means that it’s accurate to say that if you are wearing a pair of Oakleys, you are in fact wearing a pair of safety glasses.

Oakley’s lenses are not only durable; they also meet the ANSI standards for clarity (how sharp an image appears), refraction (how much an image is magnified), and prism (how much an image is shifted from its true position).  Another innovation that Oakley has added to its glasses is the Hydrophobic lens coating. This functions like putting rain-x on your sunglasses, repelling water, oil, and dust, to keep your visual field free of anything that may blur your vision.

All of this technology is great, but it wouldn’t mean much if we looked like space aliens standing next to our clients.  Thankfully, they have a wide range of frame styles, lens tints, lens colors.  Now to be fair, I may not be the most unbiased person. I own a pair of prescription glasses, 5 pair of sunglasses, 4 pair of snowboarding goggles, and even tactical boots manufactured by Oakley.  However, I don’t have an endorsement deal, I just know and appreciate a superior product for both work and play.   In the Executive Protection Business we strive to have the best equipment for the job and that does not just stop at handguns and bulletproof vest.

Bulletproof T-Shirts?

Bulletproof T-Shirts?

First we reported Bulletproof Polo’s, and now an a Fruit of the Loom that can stop a bullet?   The University of Carolina has reportedly created a breakthrough that would allow an ordinary T-Shirt to become “wearable armor” by splicing the carbon in the cotton with boron, the third hardest material on the planet.

Me personally?

I think I’m going to wait until all the beta testing is done.

Anatomy of an Engagment

Anatomy of an Engagment

Here are some of the photos during the recent ICON Celebrity & VIP Protection Training Course.  In this actual Force on Force exercise, attendees escort their VIP from a building to a nearby vehicle, however armed assailants conduct an ambush.  The students are evaluated on their reactions and decisions made.  The level of realism is intensified by the use of Airsoft weapons that deliver a realistic  (and at times painful) simulation of taking fire and having to return fire against a live person. Fashion Trend: Bulletproof Polos?

Fashion Trend: Bulletproof Polos?

While you won’t find them at Macy’s or Saks, Colombian designer Miguel Caballero has created a polo shirt “resistant” to rounds from an Uzi machine gun.  Mr. Caballero claims to have outfitted dignitaries such as President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela, and President Alvaro Uribe of Colombia.  I could see the demand from both of these guys.

The  shirt comes in multiple levels of protection:

Level 1 IIA: 9mm / 40 Smith and Wesson FMJ
Level 2 II: 9mm / .357 Magnum / 38 Super / Mini Uzi submachine gun
Level 3 IIIA: Uzi machine gun / MP5,MP9 submachine gun / 44 Magnum SJHP / Stab-proof

And of course the price $, 4000 USD.

VIP Protection Paper Targets

VIP Protection Paper Targets
So last year during one of my after-action meetings with trainers Justin Johnson & Mike Briggs I commented to them how during the live-fire drills of our training courses I would like to use a paper target that spoke more to our industry as Executive Protection Agents.  Prior to this we had been using some of the fairly common full-color situational targets that law-enforcement and the military shoot for practice.  While some of those were pretty good, none of them seemed to give me exactly what I was looking for — the scenario that I, as a bodyguard, has to suddenly pull my firearm to defend my client (as opposed to disarming a masked robber or shooting Bin Laden).  As mentioned we tried a few… then tried a few more, but I still didn’t “love ‘em”.  Then inspiration struck.  If I couldn’t find what I was looking for, then I might as well create it.  Long story short, ICON was able to partner with North America’s largest distributor of paper targets to create the ICON VIP Protection Target Line.  Shot by the wonderful photographer Kiki Koralesky of Contact Front Photography, our initial series of 6 has been well received and have been met with brisk enough sales for the manufacturer to request additional targets in the future.  As they say, necessity is the mother of invention.
