Amy Robach of the the Today show does a segment on the rise of females in the Executive Protection industry. The show spotlights Executive Protection Agent Joanna Torrens and an all female class undergoing training in the profession. While obviously greatly condensed and edited for their morning demographic, I thought the piece was a good representation of the training, challenges and mindset women would need to undergo to succeed in the male dominated bodyguard industry.
Just got off a (LONG) 22 hr flight from South Africa. Touched down and received word that the Today Show piece we did in conjunction with Harlan Austin at Bodyguard Careers aired. I’ll get a proper post up later, but in the meantime, catch the segment.

South Africa Times Reports: South African intelligence services have been accused of being slow to react to warnings of terror threats to the 2010 World Cup
The US Congress counter-terror caucus was briefed on threats to the tournament. Ronald Sandee, director of the NEFA Foundation, warned the US Congress that:
Pakistani and Somali militants are running terror training camps in northern Mozambique;
Trainees from these camps may have crossed into South Africa to join or form cells planning World Cup attacks;
Surveillance and strike teams planning attacks are well established in South Africa. Terror groups involved include al-Qaeda and their Somalian allies, al-Shahaab
Simultaneous and random attacks are being planned during the World Cup
On Wednesday, the National Joint Operational Centre was activated at an undisclosed military base in Pretoria. It is co-coordinating the deployment of all South African security and intelligence structures to ensure a safe World Cup, including 24-hour protection of teams and officials.
According to two insiders, a watch-list of 40 terror suspects has been drawn up. Police have neither confirmed nor denied the arrest or watch-list.
While you won’t find them at Macy’s or Saks, Colombian designer Miguel Caballero has created a polo shirt “resistant” to rounds from an Uzi machine gun. Mr. Caballero claims to have outfitted dignitaries such as President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela, and President Alvaro Uribe of Colombia. I could see the demand from both of these guys.
The shirt comes in multiple levels of protection:
Level 1 IIA: 9mm / 40 Smith and Wesson FMJ Level 2 II: 9mm / .357 Magnum / 38 Super / Mini Uzi submachine gun Level 3 IIIA: Uzi machine gun / MP5,MP9 submachine gun / 44 Magnum SJHP / Stab-proof
The Circuit is a Magazine co-produced by the British Bodyguard Association (BBA) and the North American Bodyguard Association (NABA) who’s goal is to spotlight the role of Executive Protection & related fields to our community and the outside world. A full-color glossy with high production values, the publication is truly international, with contributors and readers from New Zealand to New Hampshire. In addition to being the Managing US Editor, I currently write an ongoing column entitled, “Keeping Your Edge”, which gives my opinions on a variety of topics that affect our industry. Take a look at some of the past columns from me as well as other valued contributors.
Summer’s almost here, and so I felt like since I was spring cleaning, I needed a fresh coat of paint. You’re now looking at Version 3.0 of the Bodyguard Blog. Hope you like the new layout as much as the people around the office do. Lots of interactivity and multimedia modules, plus easy to access links to the most popular articles and post.
p.s., Don’t forget to leave a comment, as I’ve always considered a Blog to be a 2-way exchange of information.

So yesterday the ICON guys got a chance to let their hair down a little and represent the agency “Tiger Woods Style” at the Northfield Police Department’s Golf Tournament. Alas, because it was a busy Monday, I couldn’t make it out of the office to join them*. What I do know is that the caddies felt very safe!
*(I actually think I have a lifelong ban from the sport due to crashing a few too many carts!)
So last year during one of my after-action meetings with trainers Justin Johnson & Mike Briggs I commented to them how during the live-fire drills of our training courses I would like to use a paper target that spoke more to our industry as Executive Protection Agents. Prior to this we had been using some of the fairly common full-color situational targets that law-enforcement and the military shoot for practice. While some of those were pretty good, none of them seemed to give me exactly what I was looking for — the scenario that I, as a bodyguard, has to suddenly pull my firearm to defend my client (as opposed to disarming a masked robber or shooting Bin Laden). As mentioned we tried a few… then tried a few more, but I still didn’t “love ’em”. Then inspiration struck. If I couldn’t find what I was looking for, then I might as well create it. Long story short, ICON was able to partner with North America’s largest distributor of paper targets to create the ICON VIP Protection Target Line. Shot by the wonderful photographer Kiki Koralesky of Contact Front Photography, our initial series of 6 has been well received and have been met with brisk enough sales for the manufacturer to request additional targets in the future. As they say, necessity is the mother of invention.
