Working With An Unfamiliar Bodyguard

Working the Principal alongside an unfamiliar agent or team is an especially sensitive issue for the bodyguard, and a scenario likely to be faced by EP Agents in this industry for any length of time.  While it’s a natural reaction to be territorial as well as suspicious of a person’s ability, it’s also important to remember that an extra set of eyes or ears more often than not can only help the situation.  Simply stated, put egos to the side and get the job done.  Of course there are times when the reverse is true, and a moment of inexperience on the part of the other agent(s) may reflect negatively on you, or even worse, your client.  The best way to avoid this is to do as much research as time permits on your new teammate(s), even if you are only working with them for a short period.  Something as simple as a voucher from someone you trust in the industry could go a long way in making you feel better that the detail goes smoothly from start to finish.

Elijah…Where are the updates?

One of the coolest things about writing the blog “Icon: Behind The Bodyguard Business” is that I get to present readers with a first hand look at what goes on in the Executive Protection industry. My original thoughts were to bring readers the ups and the downs, the news and the reviews of this life I live.  After 13 years in the industry, one would figure it would get easier, but that hasn’t happened yet.  Everyday brings a new challenge and while I’m very fortunate to be in the position that I am, my heavy workload doesn’t make for a lot of sleep (or sometimes a lot of Blog updates).  Some assignments require advance preparation, international travel, or just demands that keep me away from a PC for extended periods.  And don’t get me started about combining all that with the day-to-day duties of running an office (more of which I’ll be sharing in future posts).  I say all that to say, thank you guys for frequenting the Blog and please realize that when I go a few days without posting, it’s because of my commitment to my craft (and my mortgage company =)

NBA All-Star Weekend Security Notice

An open letter to our Industry:

First the Super Bowl, then the Grammy’s now NBA All-star weekend.  Big Events mean lots of celebrities.  Lots of celebrities, means lots of security.  I wanted to first commend my brothers (and the few sisters) in the industry for your hard work which gets even harder during major gatherings like the ones listed.  So much goes into logistics, planning and preparing (well, if your doing it correctly, I suppose) and more often than not it just gets treated as part of the job (unless heaven forbid, something goes wrong).  Well here is where we get recognized even if the world just thinks we’re just paid to stand around and look menacing.  Ladies and Gentleman, courtesy of Larry Winget, the official Pat On The Back!

Most importantly, keep your client and yourself safe! – Elijah
